The family behind Porta Leone

Wine and Sparkling wine

Porta Leone is one of the main landmarks of the Bonotto family. One Sunday afternoon, walking along Via XX Settembre in Conegliano, we were looking at the buildings of this ancient medieval borough, a street that was called “contrada granda”, a street where during the Middle Ages people lived of commerce and mundane life.

Stopping for an aperitif in the most historic tavern of the city “Due Spade”, we could not miss Porta Monticano, also called Porta Leone, for the fresco of the Venetian lion painted on its arch. Built in 1530, together with the lion, the coat of arms of the city was represented on the left, and on the right the podestà Alvise Loredan, excellent captain general of the Sea of Venice.

Keeping our eyes pointed up we noticed how wonderful the frescoes of the Duomo are with the Altarpiece by Cima, Palazzo Sarcinelli, the Academy Theatre, and the Monte di Pietà with its cupids and the clouds.

Toasting with our Conegliano Valdobbiadene, we looked at each other and we thought it would be the perfect name for our italian wines, a brand that holds history, culture, and nobility.

Innovative winemaking

Innovation is the ability to see change as an opportunity, not as a threat.

Le Contesse

Many years of experience led us to the development of an original recipe for the creation of a unique and completely organic wines, 100% Made in Italy. Its goodness is owing to:

  • Soft pressing and cleaning of the must.
  • Cold storage of a part of the must, fermentation of the rest with controlled temperature and then, storage in stainless steel tanks at low temperature.
  • Secondary fermentation in pressurized vat with selected yeasts.
  • Bottling of the wine, which is then left to age for a few weeks in a conditioned warehouse.
  • Cold chain that preserves the flavours of the fruit, avoiding the use of sulphites.

Our Vineyards

Manzana

Wonderful hills in Conegliano Vldobbiadene where we cultivate Glera Grapes. A breathtaking view where we arw building our small resort, with the possibility to purchase products directly. I recommend visiting in the autumn, when you can still smell the must and the leaves become slowly tinged with a thousand different shades.

Roveredo in Piano

This is where we cultivate Ribolla Gialla, glera, pinot grigio, chardonnay, rebo, pinot nero, cabernet, merlot in excellent gravelly soil close to the Dolomites, where the fresh summer wind meets with the gentle sea breeze, filling our grapes with minerals.

S.Lucia di Piave

Just a stone’s throw from the Piave river, these grapes: pinot Grigio, Glera,Manzoni, Pinot Bianco and organic Chardonnay in Bellusera. The soil, thanks to the floods, has become gravelly over the years, characterised by round white stones rich in limestone and mineral salts.

S.Polo di Piave

This is where we cultivate our Pinot Nero, Pinot Grigio and Glera grapes to produce Merlot and Cabernet red wines, a family tradition spanning three generations. The soils are very humid,so they are not affected by drought.

Mareno di Piave

Manzoni, glera, moscato, chardonnay and pinot grigio. Here the vineyards are all organic.

Vazzola

Chardonnay, glera, verduzzo, cabernet, pinot grigio. We have the oldest vineyard in Bellussera.

S. Pietro di Feletto

In this beautiful valley, the sun in our vineyard comes only in the afternoon, this allows for a greater temperature range between day and night, creating the perfect environment for our Pinot noir.

S. Vendemmiano

Very close from the hills of Conegliano Veneto we grow chardonnay, here the scents are still sweet and fresh, perfect for the cut we want to offer our customers.

Tezze di Piave

The company headquarters. Our oldest Glera vineyards, still cultivated using the Bellussera technique, surrounded by Acacia and Elderberry trees and definitely worth visiting in the spring, perhaps even by bicycle. The perfect holiday to breathe in the fresh smell of flowers, have a picnic under the vines and gather some of the first fruits.

Susegana

Our first organic Conegliano Valdobbiadene vineyard, the vineyards, the castle, the olive trees, all nature is in balance with the work of man.
