our story
The family behind Porta Leone
Porta Leone is one of the main landmarks of the Bonotto family. One Sunday afternoon, walking along Via XX Settembre in Conegliano, we were looking at the buildings of this ancient medieval borough, a street that was called “contrada granda”, a street where during the Middle Ages people lived of commerce and mundane life.
Stopping for an aperitif in the most historic tavern of the city “Due Spade”, we could not miss Porta Monticano, also called Porta Leone, for the fresco of the Venetian lion painted on its arch. Built in 1530, together with the lion, the coat of arms of the city was represented on the left, and on the right the podestà Alvise Loredan, excellent captain general of the Sea of Venice.
Keeping our eyes pointed up we noticed how wonderful the frescoes of the Duomo are with the Altarpiece by Cima, Palazzo Sarcinelli, the Academy Theatre, and the Monte di Pietà with its cupids and the clouds.
Toasting with our Conegliano Valdobbiadene, we looked at each other and we thought it would be the perfect name for our italian wines, a brand that holds history, culture, and nobility.

Innovative winemaking
Innovation is the ability to see change as an opportunity, not as a threat.

Le Contesse
Many years of experience led us to the development of an original recipe for the creation of a unique and completely organic wines, 100% Made in Italy. Its goodness is owing to:
- Soft pressing and cleaning of the must.
- Cold storage of a part of the must, fermentation of the rest with controlled temperature and then, storage in stainless steel tanks at low temperature.
- Secondary fermentation in pressurized vat with selected yeasts.
- Bottling of the wine, which is then left to age for a few weeks in a conditioned warehouse.
- Cold chain that preserves the flavours of the fruit, avoiding the use of sulphites.
